About the University:
Al Akhawayn University is a public elite university located in Ifrane, Morocco, on the Middle Atlas Mountains. It differs from other public universities in Morocco in that it charges tuition fees. It follows the tradition of American liberal arts colleges, and teaching is carried out entirely in English language. The creation of this university was funded to a great extent from an endowment by King Fahd of Saudi Arabia that was initially earmarked for the clean-up of an oil spill off the coast of Morocco. As the wind blew the oil spill away, the originally intended clean-up was no longer considered necesary, and the endowment was used to fund the creation of a university instead. Founded by Royal Decree (Dahir) of King Hassan II of Morocco in 1993, the newly created university received the Arabic name al-akhawayn, which means literally "two brothers", referring to the two kings responsible for its creation.
